The 43 degree downward slope and strict height limitations were the
major design challenges on this three story house with sweeping views
of Oakland, San Francisco and the bay.

Built on more than 70 drilled concrete piers and grade beams, the house
terraces down the hill with its main entry at the top level, living floors
in the middle level and bedrooms on the lower floor away from the road
and among the trees. A large concrete terrace with a fire and waterfall feature over the bedrooms provides useable outdoor space for relaxing and entertaining.

The driveway is an open steel grate that floats over the hillside, preserving
the site’s natural watershed while reducing the required grading and
retaining walls.
