SAN FRANCISCO, CA
Completed 2007
Middle and high school
44,000 sf
DNM was the design architect and project manager for this conversion of a beloved San Francisco landmark to a French Lycée middle and high school overcame several challenges to succeed:
- Meeting function and code requirements while preserving the original structure’s historic character,
- Working with city officials to expedite approvals for a complete change of occupancy upgrade, and
- Opening on time with only 18 months from acquisition to occupancy.
The original 1927 building was a conservatory of music for 50 years. Larger light-filled classrooms were carved from small studios while bringing the entire structure up to current codes. The result is an efficient re-use of an urban landmark that supports its students and its community, and a great story!
Because the school was growing quickly and depending on the additional space for the upcoming school year, missing the September 2007 deadline was NOT an option. Conversion of 44,000sf landmark to a middle/high school for 250+ students was accomlished in under eight months on a tight budget, with no capital campaign, and with six 3rd - 5th grade classes occupying part of the building!
Today the converted and updated building is home to 280 students between 6th - 12th grades.
